“Our sustainability strategy is driven by three key elements and concrete commitments: valuing our people, collaborating with partners, and protecting the Planet. The centrality of people is therefore a distinctive factor that guides our responsible actions at every level—from relationships with employees and suppliers to players. We aim to advance the lottery sector with solutions that support a more inclusive future, mindful of environmental and social impact,” explained Stefania Colombo, Senior Director of Global Sustainability at Brightstar Lottery.

Brightstar’s sustainability model is guided by robust governance and inspired by three pillars that represent its commitment to sustainable action, along with six impact areas that encompass tangible, measurable projects and initiatives.

Brightstar Lottery—a publicly traded company on the New York Stock Exchange and a global leader in the lottery sector—has also committed to the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development to identify corporate priorities, and adheres to the principles of the UN Global Compact to develop and implement responsible policies and practices on human rights, labor, environment, and anti-corruption. The elements guiding the company’s sustainability strategy are: valuing people, collaborating with partners, and protecting the Planet.

Valuing People. Brightstar fosters a culture that recognizes the value of each individual, appreciates everyone’s unique skills and ideas, and supports the development of tomorrow’s professionals. The company also encourages a positive work environment, promoting welfare and wellbeing while enhancing skills through training and development programs. Among the achievements regarding employee care, in 2024 Brightstar offices in Italy, the United States, and Canada obtained the international Top Employer certification.

Collaborating with Partners. From suppliers to business partners and the communities it engages with, Brightstar believes in responsible, transparent shared growth, building relationships based on trust, ethics, and the common good. The company supports the restoration of Italy’s artistic heritage (to date, 265 projects totaling over €25 million) and promotes the value of Italian territories through urban redevelopment projects (Casilino Sky Park in Rome in 2022, Tunnel Boulevard in Milan in 2023, and DOTS Connecting Ostiense in Rome in 2024). Internationally, the company organized the fourth edition of the Brightstar Coding and Robotics Rock! Camp as part of the After School Advantage Program, aimed at ensuring access to STEM educational opportunities. Brightstar also promotes key educational and inclusion projects, such as Seguiamo la Cometa and High-Tech High School.

The company is also committed to creating a safe and positive gaming environment, where integrity is the foundation of every interaction. It has implemented a global Positive Play approach, which raises awareness of risks and available tools to protect vulnerable groups, particularly minors. This program has received the National Council on Problem Gambling’s ICAP Ready certification for its standards in responsible iLottery services, as well as responsible gaming certifications from EL – European Lotteries and WLA – World Lottery Association.

Protecting the Planet. Brightstar is committed to climate protection, conserving natural resources, and promoting circular economy practices to safeguard the environment and its resources. Every day, the company takes small but essential actions to protect biodiversity and the environment: specifically, it uses FSC-certified paper for scratch cards, lottery tickets, and receipts for the Gioco del Lotto to preserve forests. It also promotes multi-play tickets and encourages the digital version of the Gioco del Lotto.

In 2024, Brightstar achieved several key milestones, including integrating life cycle assessments of Brightstar terminals into product development. To reduce transport-related emissions, it launched the digital initiative MySelf, minimizing technical interventions at physical collection points, and optimized logistics and distribution of communication materials for Gioco del Lotto and instant tickets (produced exclusively with water-based inks and coatings to minimize harmful substances).

Regarding production, all energy used by Brightstar to print Gioco del Lotto tickets comes from renewable sources, and all plastic casings for printing cartridges are recycled to reduce waste and encourage reuse of materials that would otherwise be discarded.

In Italy, the Move Smart – Move Green program, launched in 2022, aims to encourage public transport use, promote cycling, and support micromobility for commuting.

These are just some of the milestones Brightstar has achieved in environmental and social sustainability: “The past year has been transformative for our company. We adopted a new name (previously International Game Technology PLC) and renewed our brand identity with a stronger focus on our core business,” explained Stefania Colombo. “We are ambitious in guiding the evolution of the lottery sector with solutions that support a more sustainable future. With this in mind, we have evolved our sustainability strategy to ensure it grows alongside us.”
